Does the EU AI Act apply to my store?

It applies if you sell to shoppers in the EU and use any of these:

  • An AI chatbot, shopping assistant, or AI live chat.
  • AI-generated or AI-manipulated images shown to shoppers (AI model photos, virtual try-on, synthetic scenes).
  • AI-generated text or audio presented as such.

It applies regardless of where your business is based. What matters is that EU shoppers see the output.

What Article 50 requires, in plain terms

  • Chatbot disclosure. Tell shoppers when they are talking to an AI, not a human.
  • AI content marking. Clearly label content that is AI-generated or manipulated.

What to do before 2 August 2026

  1. Map where you use AI on your storefront (chat, images, text).
  2. Add a clear “you’re chatting with an AI” notice.
  3. Label AI-generated content where it appears.
  4. Keep the notices live and translated for the EU languages you sell in.
  5. Keep a dated record in case a regulator asks.
